V-J Day Kiss- is it right it’s romanticised?

So I’m talking about this famous kiss:

It was done against the woman’s will, in an act of celebration (from the mans part). The two people were strangers, he grabbed her, kissed her, and allegedly afterwards she slapped him for assaulting her.

To me, this picture makes me deeply uncomfortable. It’s not only his pose (he has her in a headlock/his is a strong power stance/she is rendered vulnerable, bending to his will), but also the fact that the picture was so widely romanticised- even enough for a statue to be made of the kiss/assault.

I think it’s right that some people want the statue taken down. I believe the veterans (both male and female) of WWII should be commemorated appropriately, and not with a statue of an assault. To me, it is as inappropriate as a statue depicting slavery or black/white segregation. People are harassed, abused, and raped every day, and I don’t think it’s right that this statue undermines their position and voice.

But what do you think?
