Treating AC with chemicals/safe for LO?

I have a four month old baby and the evap coil in our AC unit is dirty/producing a foul odor. We haven't been able to run it without the odor for days. Our apartment complex says they've ordered something to clean the coil with and run through the system but that I will need to take my LO out of the apartment for the day. My concern is, if the chemicals they're using are strong enough to hurt him if he's here, should they really be using them at all? He will be exposed afterwards by the AC running even if it's in small amounts. Should I ask them to have a professional fix it? Just replace the coil? I don't want to be rude but I'm very concerned.
