When can I use an ovulation test?

Hi guys, glow changed my fertile window after I logged the other day so I'm in a bit of a quandary now. I've bought an ovulation kit to help out pin pointing. I've read you can do it just before you ovulate, does anyone know if it detects when you're actually ovulating? 
​As in if I think I'm ovulating today will it give me a positive or negative? Or does it only detect before?

​I'm cd18. Did ovulation test and it came up negative. Glow readjusted to say my fertile window is finished but think I was curious to check whether the original suggestion was right or the adjusted. First month using glow after 9 years on the pill so still waiting for regularity I think.

Hi Stacie - depending on how regular cycles are, I would start testing around cd8 and do so until you get a positive.

​If you feel you are ovulating today, still take the test. Depending on the test, it will at least tell you if you are experiencing an LH surge.

i have been testing since cd10 i am on cd24 today and havent had a pos opk yet this is one longg cycle atarting to fink i aint gonna O this cycle

If you get a LH surge, which would be a positive and you will ovulate within 12-36 hours. I've been testing since 9dpo and I'm on 16dpo and still getting negatives. My window should be this week! GL!
