You have to chose between career and children!
Ok so I just had to rant about this and hope someone understands....
Yesterday I went to my college to talk to some of my professors for career advice. I graduated 2010 for automotive service technician and have been working in the trade since. In total since I started my formal apprenticeship training it has been 10 years. I’m currently 29.
I’m looking for career advice as I plan on having children within the next 5 years and what I can do or where I can take my career currently to accommodate for pregnancy but still work toward my goal of becoming a professor of automotive service at the college.
Basically one of my mentors told me that i had to choose between career or having a family and should spend the next five years focussing on work or forgo a successful career.
I’m allready successful in my field! And my first thought was..... I doubt that has ever been said to any of the men I work with!
I get that yes we women are the ones who carry the babies for nine months! But Jesus! A professor is advising me that if I chose to have a family there is no other option for career advancement? It’s total BS! Worst advice ever!!!
I also know that should I chose a position in the automotive industry that is off the bench there are many opportunities for women in the skilled trades!!!
Has anyone else ever encountered this kind of misogyny?
