“Bye Becky.”
So in CC today my attention was brought to the fact that the term “Becky” is apparently a slur, and is used in a derogatory way towards white women? I’m being dead serious when I tell you this is the first time I’m hearing this.
Now you lot know I do NOT believe in reverse racism (because it doesn’t exist, duh) but I don’t want to be a woman who doesn’t practise what she preaches, and I’m not interested in using words that are derogatory towards ANY race. I would flip my shit if a white woman said to me “Bye Shaniqua” and that’s the truth, so I wouldn’t want to do it to someone else.
What do you guys think? My question to my fellow allies, my sisters of colour and anyone else in between is, can the phrase “Bye Becky” or using the word “Becky” to refer to a white woman be classed as a slur? Is it on the same level as other racial slurs?
