Doula or No Doula? FTM

Question

Would / do you have a doula? Why/why not? I’m a FTM considering a doula and wondering what people’s thoughts and experiences are. Thanks!

a doula teaches my birthing class and they are super expensive. up to 2000 dollars for a credible one. I'm good! I would rather put that 2000 towards something else.

I’m going for an unmedicated, natural birth. My husband is my birth partner. For me, I want my husband to be as supported as possible while he’s doing his best to support me. My doula will ensure our privacy during labor, communicate to hospital staff our wishes, she is well versed in pain management techniques and can remind my husband of the things he can say and do to support me.  Personally, I feel I will be able to focus on my labor and remain in my primitive mind with that extra layer of support my doula will provide. I won’t have to worry about my husband having to do everything. I can focus on labor, he can focus on me, and our doula can handle the rest. :)

had a doula with the first, having her again with the second.
I had an unmedicated birth and while I was in what was supposed to be early stages of labor, the midwife left me alone thinking it'd be a few hours. my doula helped with the intense contractions that hit during that time and was the one to call the midwife back in. plus, my husband uses a wheelchair so having someone with more physical ability in the room was helpful. finally, she took photos during the birth.

My friend/coworker is a full-spectrum doula and was nice enough to attend the birth of my daughter. I didn’t have a doula with my son and I definitely think it made a difference. She was there to be my voice when I wasn’t able to vocalize what I wanted and she helped keep me focused.

I have a midwife which is covered by free healthcare (yay Canada) so I don’t feel the need to pay a ton of money for a birth coach when I’ll have a trained professional and my mom at my birth :)

I had first 2 babies no doula and natural. Third child was natural with a doula, huge difference. First difference, they manage the atmosphere, small thingslike music, light, who’s coming and going, so my husband is with me the whole time. Second, PAIN management! With every contraction she was counter pressuring, I didn’t even know I was to the point of pushing, because the pain was so manageable. I thought I was only 6-7 dilation and then I was checked and was ready to deliver. If no other reason(and your going natural) she helped so much with the pain, it was by far the easiest birth. I will definitely be using her again with this birth. If going epidural route I don’t see how one would be much use, with the exception, it may be comforting to have someone with you, just for you, that has walked through this before and knows what to expect.

I have a doula. The hospital I’m delivering offers a grant program to cover the costs of the doula. My ob submitted an application on my behalf requesting the doula free of charge and I was approved. I love my doula, she is awesome and very caring.

I don’t see a point. I have a great team of doctors and doulas are expensive. Plus all the doulas in my area are all about like home water births and stuff like that and it is NOT for me. There’s prenatal classes and birthing classes and pretty much everything a doula offers in way cheaper options that are just as good. Totally a personal choice though.
