when to let kids feed themselves?

so my son is 1 and he can obviously feed himself finger foods and stuff by himself but when should i try to get him to feed himself like with silverware and stuff?

Just give him one and let him learn by copying you. I started giving one when my son turned one. He’s 18 months now and can use a fork but he’s still not perfect with it so he gives up and uses his hands, but he tries hard to get better with the fork.

My daughter started using a spoon sometime before her first birthday. She then switched to a new daycare shortly after her first birthday and I was surprised when, a couple of weeks later, they took pictures of her eating with a fork and drinking from a regular cup. It’s been kind of a pattern since then that they start things much earlier in daycare than what would have occurred to me. 🙈 Chances are they can do a lot more than you think.

At the daycare I worked at we gave the children silverware when they started eating real food. (Plastic spoons, obviously monitored)

I started at 1 when i saw he was interested! He’s still getting the hang of it!

For me I did around six months when he could start having little things like Cheerios. He does really well with it now because I started it early.

Whenever they express interest. My 10 month old tries using a spoon at almost every meal lol she’s obviously not doing very well with it right now but it’s really good to let them practice.

I know I'm the slowest at letting my son do stuff haha but he is 16 months and I've never let him try to feed himself with silverware, he can bc my granny let's him do it but I just am too lazy to pick up some baby forks lol he can't figure out the spoon he turns his hand and it all falls off lol
