Options?

What else is available other than epidural for labor? My sisters and I have terrible scoliosis and I remember it took about 5 tries to get epidural in right place for my Lil sis. Eventually they had to aim much higher on her spine so it didn’t work as well. I don’t want to go through that. 20 years ago I had Demerol but I hear it’s no longer available? Just made me high anyway. Did nothing for pain.

I don’t know that pain meds they gave me with my first labor. But it was terrible. It did nothing for the pain. I couldn’t function with it, like talk, breathe, had trouble keeping eyes open. I had trouble communicating that I needed to stop it because I felt like I was in a tiny box and couldn’t breathe. It was given in my iv and so with other births I’ve been like none of that pain killer that didn’t work while in labor.

I have scoliosis too. My epidural only took one try, but it had issues. Our family friend who is a doctor says that the epidural probably didn’t get inserted perfectly due to my scoliosis. I’m hoping to not have to have one this time 😬

It just depends on what your hospital offers. Some will let you have the nitrous oxide gas (laughing gas), some will allow you to have IV medications, but after a certain point they don't allow you to. I know my hospital has a ton of medication free pain relief options like allowing you to stand in the shower with the hot water, several different kinds of birthing balls, a squatting bar, nurses trained in applying counter pressure and to show your SO/Birthing Partner how to do it, they also know lots of different positions that you can labor in to help with pain relief.

look into nitrous oxide. you self administer it and it wears off within 5 minutes so you can stop if you don't like the effect.

You can try no pain meds and instead move around for pain relief. If your hospital has it, utilize the birth tub and try rocking on hands and knees. Also, ask if they have a doula. My last birth, the water was my bff. It was so soothing and relaxing. Laying on your back doesn’t help in terms of pain relief

I want to say they gave me something called Stadol but it could have been Demorol (This was 10 years ago) I will be honest... if it even 'took the edge off' I didn't notice. Speak to your OB about what options they use. Some places even use Nitrous oxide.
