Do you think it’s wrong to get a tattoo of someone else’s art?

If you find a cool picture on Pinterest or Google of a tattoo you’d like to have is it wrong to get it??
There was a YouTuber not long ago who was dragged through the dirt for getting tattoos of someone’s art that she loved. She lost a lot of followers, and people made videos of how horrible she was. Do you think it’s wrong or just appreciation?

Being a tattoo artist (woot last class was yesterday just graduated😍) the world of art and tats isn’t really that original. Every artist will have a flare spun into the work they do, but a TON of work is NOT original in the slightest. Chances are the cool piece you find came from another who got it from another etc. unless you do an original drawnup one, which even then there’s a saying about how nothing we draw is truly unique in this world of billions of people. That you’ve at some point subconsciously been exposed to what it is you’re drawing etc.

I guess if it's someone else's art,  then try to contact that person and ask permission if possible.  If not, and when in doubt,  don't get it.  although I doubt anyone who's not in the pubic eye will really receive any backlash for getting someone's work

I think it’s wrong on the tattoo artist to do so. It’s literally taking someone’s art and it is plagiarism.

I'm 26 years old and I got my first tattoo done last year in oct! I was visiting my mom in pa(I'm from cali)and decided i wanted my first tattoo done. I walked in with an idea on what I wanted my first tattoo to look like and showed him a picture of it, my mom looked at me and said "let him do his own work, tell him your ideas and let him come up with something" i said "ok I'd like to see what you can do" and gave him my ideas. He jotted them down on paper and a few days later I went in and was blown away by what he came up with and I will tell you what I am so happy I let him design it because his art work is so beautiful! He even picked the colors and little did he know they where my favorite colors🤷🏼‍♀️I get compliments all the time. It only took 30 min to do it when he said it could take and hr n a half!!!

Most decent tattoo artists won't copy someone else's work. In my experience, I come in with an idea or an example and they work with it but always make it their own. I do think it's wrong to go on Pinterest or anywhere else and try to copy someone else's artwork exactly as it is.

There is an artist named Jessica Brennan. 
I had a lotus on my back already in 2009. And I wanted to add to it in 2013. I found her photo of a lotus with a design around it. I took it to my artist and said “this is exactly what I want, but don’t do this exactly”.
I messaged Jessica and shared ideas & she actually got back to me! 
For some weird reason..... The universe gave me this “gift” of finding this tattoo, every time i opened tumblr or Pinterest, or.... 😱 this app 😱.
She was ripped off so much that Forever 21 stole her design and printed it on a shirt with no royalty to her. 
So if you see this design.... know Jessica Brennan did it originally, and she deserves credit with the way people have ripped her off so hard that a major clothing store thought it was okay to steal from her too.

A good artist will take the concept of the piece by make it there own and change it to fit the body part you are placing it.

All of my tattoos are original and drawn on, but I wouldn’t be mad if someone wanted the same tattoo.

I gave my tattoo artist reference pictures and he picked one and put his own spin on it. It’s similar, but not nearly exact. 90% of my tattoo is freehand. I think things like that are okay. But literally tracing a piece of art and then tattooing it isn’t unless you got permission from that artist.

I don't see how it would be wrong unless there was some sort of copyright against using a likeness of the art (since you wouldn't be using the actual art at all, it would be the tattoo artists rendition/copy).
