Are we doing the right thing?

Question

So my husband and I have a 3yrs old boy and even before got pregnant we decided to have only one child, we analyzed our lifestyle and everything and decided this (at least for now, we know we can change our minds in future and no problem) but our family started asked for baby #2 and every time we say our plan was only one our family members and some friends call us selfish or say that our son will grow up spoiled and alone ... anyways I just want to know what you guys think about that, and moms of one child how you guys deal with it.

Your family, your choice. Period. 
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with choosing to have an only child (coming from someone who had two siblings and loved it). 
Just as personal experience though, every only child I’ve met has said they wished they had a sibling. Not saying EVERY only child feels this way, just the ones that I’ve personally talked to.

Im the only child from my mom & growing up without siblings was very boring and lonely at times but I did basically get whatever I wanted . I now have 2 siblings from my dad but since we are so far apart (9 & 11 years) were not really connected so I would say one more would be nice or just keep him around his cousins/family & he should be fine.

We only have one child and intend on keeping it that way and hear that as well. I honestly tell people we're happy with one child and couldn't afford another one even if we wanted one, so unless they wanted to pay for it and then come to my house to take care of it, they need to keep their opinion to themselves.

I have 5 and I still believe it's your decision and not friends or family's. A lone child doesn't necessarily have to be spoiled or anything like that,  it's quite ignorant to believe that and I wish people stop trying to guilt you into having another child that you're not ready for. I think you're doing the right thing planning and preparing yourself before making the decision to have more kids

Its your choice on how many kids you guys want not your family or friends. they dont pay your bills take care of your household so the choice you guys make is just that yours alone. people gona talk regardless if you have one or 5. i wanted 1 child after having a terrible pregnancy and then having to recover from an emergency c section bc i almost lost my little girl, i said i didnt want anymore and was firm with my choice but now i want another. i was fine with having 1 n spoiling her etc but i kind of want her to have a sibling. its your family and only you know whats best for your family.

But it’s your family it’s up to you not anyone else how many kids you have. 
I think it’s it’s very smart to say we can have x number of kids and be happy.

I honestly believe that having one child isn’t good. I’ve never met an only child that actually liked it. I had 6 brothers and sisters but due to circumstances I grew up basically alone and it was lonely.

I was an only child and have only ever wanted one- I don’t feel like I missed out on anything and had a fantastic childhood. That being said I have since given birth and am already pining after a sibling for my eight week old but we will only be having the one too. Thankfully our families were under the impression that we didn’t want any so they are all happy with the one and we have made it clear for a while that this is it. It just means that she is extra spoilt by everyone :)

I think it’s pretty damn rude that they’re trying to tell you how many kids you should have. There are so many different factors that go into that decision. It has to be a decision that you and your spouse make and your families should respect that.

Honestly I’d be pretty pissed if people I know and cared about spoke to me like that! I’d explain that their comments are uncalled for and you know what works best for your family. Then if they can’t respect you enough to keep their mouths shut about that, I’d let them know that you’re going to be spending less time with them because you don’t want to hear that kind of thing.
