IUI How do they work?

Question

So how do IUIs work is it something that I will have to take a bunch of time off work for and go Into the dr offices around the time of ovulation to have it done. What are the steps I need to take? How often do they actually work?

So I guess it depends on your treatment facility. For mine you have to go for cycle monitoring (bloodwork and ultrasound) on day 1. Then you start meds. You go back for cycle monitoring on day 10 and then every 1-3 days until you ovulate. My place does cycle monitoring between 6:30-8am so I just go before work. On the day of our iui your partner goes in at 6:30/7am (or if you’re using donor sperm then they wash it at that time) and you go in two hours later for iui. It takes 5 min and you lie down on the table for 15min after. It doesn’t really hurt (a bit pinchy like a lengthy Pap test) and you don’t take any meds so you can go right back to work. So if your fertility place is close to work ou could just take an early lunch break or take the morning off if you had to. I’m not sure if everyone does cycle monitoring that way but that’s the most inconvenient part of it. Hope that helps.
Also the chance of it working depends on your circumstances. At best it’s abou a 20% chance. IVF is about a 40% at best. The better the sperm the better the chances. A “good” sample will have over ten million motile sperm. Most research suggests that if you have three unsuccessful iui the odds  are nt in your favour and you should switch to ivf    Infertility is such an individual thing that this is really more of a conversation you should be having with your specialist to determine what is the best protocol for you.
