1 1/2 year old throwing tantrums?

Whenever I go to pick up my son who is 1 1/2 from the babysitter, who is his grandma, he throws the biggest tantrum ever. He starts pulling his hair, throwing things at me, and when I try to pick him up he screams and scratches me.... Sometimes even bites. He loves being at grandmas as you can tell.. Is this normal? I feel like a terrible mom because my son doesn't even want to see me but would rather stay at grandmas. What am I doing wrong? Anyone else have this happen?

Have his grandma talk more about you throughout the day. If he makes something ask if she can say something like "Wow! I bet your momma is going to love what you made!" Or just easy the transition for him by letting him know that his mama is going to be here soon 😁 Also be sure to reassure him that he'll see grandma tomorrow, and that it's okay to be sad about missing her. Also have him do something exciting like helping you cook dinner, even let him pick it out sometimes that way he feels special and loved by you. I am a toddler Montessori Teacher dealing with children who are 1 to 3 years old. They understand a lot. Just talk about and recognize their emotions as valid no matter what they are and let them know you love them! Transitions are hard and It's COMPLETELY normal!

He loves you.  It is very possible it is just the sudden change that has him frustrated.  Maybe you can just let him be for a while.  When you come to pick him up go and sit and talk to your mom for awhile, until he comes to you.  Ignore his tantrum and just go into another room and wait for him to calm.

I'd be more concerned as to WHY he thinks it's ok to hit you. He is never allowed to hit you (or others, period).
