TTC while breastfeeding

My husband and I are starting to try for baby #2. We have an 8 1/2 Month old that has been exclusively breastfed since birth (plus the last 2 months of solid foods). I have been taking ovulation tests the 4 months trying to get an idea of my cycle and it says I'm peaking almost to the same day every month but no period yet. I am starting to wean my baby from breastfeeding (but still breastfeed until he's a year old 2-4 times a day).  The doctors gave us a go on getting pregnant again but told me that I won't get pregnant without my cycle back and while I'm breastfeeding so much. But wondering why would I be ovulating every month? (the docs said that's just coincidence and that my hormones are in flux-but I get ovulation pains and irritable at the same time the test tells me I'm ovulating). 

Anyone else in a similar boat? We're wondering how likely it is we'd be pregnant soon.
