Awkward Encounters
So my older brother and his wife are having their first baby in June, and my mom made a quilt for this baby. She posted a picture of the quilt on Facebook with a vague caption about, “Since it’s been received, I can share the picture I made of my soon-to-be-born grandchild.” I think most people forget about my older brother (he is 16 years older than me and lives 16+ hours away, so we don’t see him much) and lots of people don’t realize he is divorced and re-married and expecting his first child with his new wife.
People are making the assumption that I am pregnant and the quilt is for my baby. What people don’t know is that I actually am pregnant, 9w1d today. My parents know that I am. Someone approached my mom in church to congratulate her on MY baby, and she was stunned, how did this lady know that I was pregnant? Oops, awkward, she had no idea, she just assumed it was for me.
I work at a hospital, and today a nurse who is a friend of my mom’s congratulated me on my baby. I was so taken aback all I could say was, “How did you know??” And she said, “Oh, I saw a picture of the quilt on your mom’s Facebook.” Ohhhh.... That’s not mine, but I basically just admitted that I was pregnant. So I guess explained why I was so confused, and she asked me when I was due. I said December, and she said, “Oh, so still really early.” She then politely explained how her daughter has had two miscarriages, so it’s hard to know when is too soon to share.
I am SO IRRITATED right now. I feel like she unintentionally 1) dismissed my pregnancy because it is “really early” and 2) basically told me I shouldn’t be telling anyone yet.
WELL, I WOULDN’T HAVE TOLD YOU IF YOU HADN’T MADE THE INCORRECT ASSUMPTION THAT THE QUILT WAS FOR MY BABY 😡 My baby that nobody knows about because I’m keeping it a secret for now. Ughhhh. I know I’m taking this to personally, but I just can’t deal today. Thanks, Mom, for putting me in this position, and thanks, lady, for making me feel bad about being pregnant. 😒😒
