Do you think that if the US had universal healthcare and free college tuition that enlistment rates for the military would go down?

Probably. Everyone that I know has done it purely for the benefits. I'm sure some people do it for the love of the military or the country, but I'm not sure what percentage do.

I don't know anyone that joined for the healthcare. Tricare isn't that great imo. But for college maybe. At least until the mil catches up and offers bonuses again instead of tuition. That's kinda what they had before they paid for school. A lot of people join to leave their hometown and see the world, so I'd say it's probably not gonna be that big of a drop.

Yes, I personally know someone who joined because his degree would be paid for. So those people wouldn't enlist. I dont think it's a large percentage though.

I would hope so. We do not need to be sending young, impressionable people to go kill ancient indigenous civilizations of the "middle East".

Maybe but all of the people that I know that joined either wanted to get away from family or didn’t know what they wanted to do with their lives yet. It’s not until after they joined that they realized it wasn’t everything everyone makes it. Most people I know tell other people not to join because it changes you and your entire life.

I wonder how many of the countries who have an army and both universal healthcare and free university also have universal conscription. I know in Norway that's the case- everyone serves in the army. Iceland has affordable school and universal healthcare but no army.

Healthcare probably not so much, because from what I've heard tricare can be pretty crappy anyway, but maybe for the free college. I mean, I don't think college should be free in the first place, but I do feel that those who choose to serve our country deserve to have access to special programs and (some) special privileges (like free college) for their time and service.
