Should elective ultrasounds be illegal?

Re • 24. Capricorn. Wife. Mother to a Scorpio boy and Scorpio girl 💙💖

Feel free to roast me if this question has already been asked 😉

So a little story: today I had my NT scan and bloodwork. Neither one of these have an option for gender determination (I was gonna ask the tech to hazard a guess, but baby wasn’t cooperating to begin with plus they had their little legs crossed). Now my regular OB said I could schedule my anatomy scan as early as 18 weeks, but the doctor at the Maternal Fetal Medicine office where the ultrasounds are done refused to let me schedule it for a day before 20 weeks. Not a big deal, I know, but I’m bitter because I was excited!

So I decided I would look into an elective place, that way I can do 3D (something I didn’t even know existed when I was pregnant with my son) and even go a little bit earlier as I’ve read most places offer gender determination starting around 14 weeks (I am 14+4). So I’m searching for a place and I can’t find one in my state!

I come across a post on baby center talking about how elective ultrasounds are illegal in Oregon - sure enough I did some digging and they were made illegal in 2014. I didn’t get a confirmed answer on why but some theories are: a person may choose to terminate a pregnancy based on sex of baby, a person may opt for only elective ultrasounds instead of prenatal care, the safety of non-medically necessary ultrasounds is questionable and the qualifications that allow someone to perform elective ultrasounds are questionable.

Now I think it’s a silly law - while I believe some of the theories/possibilities as to why this law was created are concerning, many other places allow elective ultrasounds and as I’m aware, it’s not done any damage. What do you think?

Also if you are in a country other than the US: do you know your country/area laws about elective ultrasounds? What do you think about them?
