Do grandparents usually try to help pay for their grandchild's first birthday? 
My mom wants to pay for my daughters  cake and smash cake and I'm not sure if I want her to, but if it's something grandparents usually do then I might let her. 
(My daughter is her first gand-baby)

With my kids being my parents first grandkids they go above & beyond for them, my mom has paid for many many things before and i always try to pay her back and she never lets me. Even till this day anywhere she goes out and sees something for babies or things my kids might like she buys it without hesitation. I guess its just grandparents being grandparents😊

Let her pay if she wants, unless you are concerned for her financially. I don’t think there are rules on who pays for what when it comes to 1st birthdays.

My parents always offer to not only host parties at their house (they have a bigger backyard)  but they also help with food

We were broke and about to call off the party but my mil said she would pay up to "x" amount. Pretty sure we went over that limit by the time it was said and done but she will do anything for our son.

I don’t see anything wrong with it. It’s their first grandchild. I’m sure they are over the moon. I say it would be fine.
