Is it rude not to remember someone you've met?

I know it depends but if you had to choose one. Here are two personal experiences from both positions, I'm on the fence myself about which I would choose if I had to decide if it's mostly rude or mostly not.
I was registering folks for a training and asked the man his last name. He chuckled and made a joke about how I forgot him. Apparently we'd met before for some event. He proceeded to make me feel a little shitty about it and I was a little upset given I was wearing a name badge and who knows if he even recognized me at all.
On the flip side, I have a coworker who introduced  himself to me every time we met. I don't work with him but we've hung out at after work parties so I think whe would at least remember what I looked like. The fourth time this happened I simply told him we've met before actually.

Sooo this is what I do. I say, “Hey, what’s your name again?” They’ll say their first name. Then I say, “No, I know that! I meant your last name.” 😂😂 This is what my dad taught me. I’ll sometimes even ask how they spell their name. People spell their names so differently now that it can typically work pretty well. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I have the worst memory. I might remember a face but I almost always forget names. So I don’t take it personally if someone forgets me completely considering my memory is bad enough, theirs might be worse 😭😂

If you’d met once at an event, it was really rude of him to make you feel bad about not remembering his name. 
I’m terrible with names - I still have trouble with people at my new job (where I’ve been for 15 months...)

I say no as I don't remember a lot of people from when I was a child. My husband and I ran into an old admin from my elementary school and I couldn't for the life of me remember her name.

Omg recently a girl came up to me in college saying we went together to school in 3rd. She remembered my name but I didn't hers and she look offended. I felt bad but it was so long ago😂

After I’ve met someone a few times and they introduce themselves again for the 5th time I’m pretty offended. I think some people just do that even though they do have a memory of meeting that person. It does come across rude.

No, I’m the worst at remember names. I have a very good photographic memory so I can remember a face very easily, but names are a different ball game. I think though if you have met some more than a handful of times and you don’t remember than they just didn’t make a presence of themselves. I find I’m around someone I’ve met before I will just reintroduce myself because then another person will likely also and I don’t sit there wracking my brain trying to remember.

Here’s a question though: is it rude to tell someone who doesn’t remember you and  introduces themselves “we’ve met before”?? I have absolutely no filter and blurt that out when I know I’ve met someone before and never thought it could be taken as rude, but this post got me thinking maybe it is? I mean I usually feel flattered when I’m introducing myself and someone I don’t remember remembers me. I feel bad for not remembering them but also flattered at the same time. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I met my husband twice before we officially “met”. And I don’t mean quick “hi” and “bye”, I mean we had lunch 😂 he had to show me pictures because I didn’t believe him. Third time was the charm, I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️ 
I don’t think it’s rude. Some people are awful at remembering faces/names
