First time tamponing

Right so I’m 14 and I want to start using tampons because it seems easier and pads make me feel gross. (Ive had my period for about 3/4 years now so I know what’s going on) I recently tried to insert a tampon and I don’t think I did it right. I got most of it on except from the bottom (not the string) and it felt uncomfortable and I could barely walk. Then when I took it out it felt scratchy and dry. Can someone help me x
