Butterfly or moth?

This little fella was sitting on me for a good twenty minutes. Is he/she a butterfly or a moth?

I’m pretty sure it’s a moth, but I can’t see the body very well. If the body was hairy, then it was a moth. If it wasn’t hairy, then it was a butterfly.

I would say moth, but that's based solely on intuition, not personal experience or knowledge. The pattern on the wings looks very moth-like.
