This is a VERY broad question.
Babies should not cry it out until they're 5 or 6 months of age and can self soothe.
I personally did the frequent check ins and soothing without picking up the baby. I'd rock the baby before bed, feed the baby in the night  if it had been 3 hours or more since last feeding (therefore legitimately hungry and not just eating to sleep) and do a diaper change. But if baby cried despite my frequent check ins, baby cried (again, I didn't start until baby was mobile). It took less than a week and they learned to go to sleep on their own. My 3 older kids (ages 1.5 to 6) all go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time due to the sleep training.

Nope. Never felt it necessary and don't really believe in CIO. He's 1.5 and had never really cried when nothing was wrong. As for nights, I was still breastfeeding him several times a night at 15 months. I believe they will sleep through the night when they're ready. But even if you do CIO, never do it before six months. Babies are not capable of self-soothing before six months.

Yep. Around 7 months my son got really good at self soothing so he often whines himself to sleep during naps. My son has a good disposition, so if he’s actually crying it means there’s something wrong (nightmare, tummy ache, foot stuck in crib, etc) so I would never leave him to CIO fully because it would be mean and ineffective. Some babies cry for the heck of it, however, so you really have to know your baby and their different cries in order to do it effectively.
