Hitchhiking: Would you/have you picked up a hitchhiker?

This might be a fun topic to discuss. 🤷‍♂️

Would you ever pick up a hitchhiker?

Does it depend on the person? Does it depend on the situation?

I've been in the car when people have driven by hitchhikers and heard their remarks. Usually it's "I don't pick up male hitchhikers." Does anyone feel the same? If the hitchhiker was female, would you pick them up?

I have picked up one hitchhiker in my life. It was about 3 years ago. I was alone, driving on a familiar busy road. It was absolutely pouring out. A young girl was walking down the road. No jacket. Soaking wet. She couldn't have been older than me by a year or two. Upon picking her up, she said she was trying to get back home from the senior basketball game. The bus left and she had left her phone/bag on the bus. She was 17/18. She was literally walking a 35 minute DRIVE in the pouring rain to get home. I just happened to be headed to her home town to visit with some family. So I gave her a ride. The only ackward part was we both were quiet nearly the entire time 😂

In any other circumstance, I wouldn't have stopped. I will never pick up a male hitchhiker. My dad used to all the time when I was a kid. Sometimes more than one really creepy looking guy. I'd then have to sit in the backseat with a complete stranger. They'd always say weird shit to me. My dad was a bigger, intimidating guy, so I somewhat felt safe. But really uncomfortable.

Now that I have kids, I won't pick up anyone ever. Unless I happen to know them, which would be strange.

My psycho mother once picked up a hitchhiker that literally had a dead body in the bag. She let him put it in the back of the truck. My brother told me part of the story. It was really terrifying. He was just 12. I wasn't with them because by this time my mother and father had already up and abandoned me.

What are your thoughts on picking up hitchhikers? Any fun stories?
