Rant; why are people like this?

So my husband got a job, it pays great. Usually. He does construction work, and the prices stay the same but different people hire him. Well a man hired him last week and yeah he was do this and that and this and that, and he made my husband redo work if he found he didn’t like how a nail or screw was placed. Anyway, payday (friday) rolls around and he gives my husband a check. We go deposit that check, and next thing we know it’s on hold. Zero funds. Whyyyyyyyyyyy are people like this????? Now my husband has to track him down, and make him pay. Or go through a whole legal process.....
