Does political/moral differences create a volatile enviornment in social media?

When it comes to social media, everything u post has the potential to "backfire" or be "blown out of proportion" rather youre an "every day" person or a celebrity, anything you post is open to scrutiny. With the current political climate, i have noticed more people losing their jobs over current or old social media post. While i definitly do not tolerate hate and blatant ignorance, and completely understand why one can lose their job over it, i personally have never really felt the need to Dig into someones past 3months let alone 5-10 years.

i was watching this suspect episode where the person being used catfish people happened to be an YT influencer, she was also being stalked and someone was using her family as well as her pix to assume fake profiles. Long story short, the Youtuber mentioned wanting to get to the bottom of it because she feared if one of the fake accounts posted something intolerant or racist, she would be to blame for it. which got me thinking..

1. Have we created an environment where in one breath we can say "social media isnt real life" but in the next breath "drag" someone to the gutters because of a single social media post?

2. Does posting someones personal information (where they work, birth name, address etc) ever "the right" thing to do when you dont agree with their social media choices (post, reblogs, likes etc)?

BONUS QUESTION

while composing this i got side tracked and started thinking about "twitter detectives". some cases have been solved with the help of twitter or other social media platforms, in other cases the rumors "twitter detectives" started have lead to the death or assault of innocent people. Why is it that we are willing to risk someones livelihood over something that happened over social media? And at what point do we decide to take social media seriously or not?
