Skin to Skin post c-section?

My first c-s, my son and I were put in different rooms for my 2hr post-op recovery. There was nothing wrong with his Apgar. As I read journaled articles, this is incredibly common and seems to be easiest on the hospital rather than what’s best for mom and baby. My last appt before my c-s is tomorrow, I wondered if anyone had any advice/experience advocating for skin-skin with their dr pre-c section.

We were given skin to skin right away after my section and baby was never taken away from me except for a quick clean and weight check etc, but she was given straight back and we went to recovery together, she stayed with me the whole time. I would make it clear to the doctor that this is what you want and that it is really important to you. Just be open and honest that you feel it is better for you and baby to do this.

I had an unplanned c section and my baby was placed on my chest immediately after for some brief skin to skin, and then he was taken away while they stitched me up. We were separated for about an hour while I was still in the OR, then put back in the same room. My husband and mom did skin to skin with him while they waited for me! :) doesn’t only have to be the mom who does it.
I’m not sure why baby would be separated from you once you’re out of the OR? Skin to skin is definitely beneficial for baby, if it’s at all possible to do so. Good luck and congrats on your new baby!

I was under general anesthesia, so I couldn’t hold him until I was conscious and out of the recovery room. Our son had to go to the nursery for assistance in breathing and low sugars. My husband went with to the nursery and once the breathing concern was resolved, he did skin to skin. He figured he’d have an hour or so of that before I woke up - nope! He barely had 10 min and the nurses were letting him know I was awake and needing him. It wasn’t as immediate or as long as we would have liked, but it’s what we could manage given the circumstances. I’m grateful our medical team did what they could to help us have some semblance of our initial all natural birth plan.

I got to hold both my daughters within a about a half hour after being in the recovery room after my c-sections even though I had major complications with my first daughter. I nursed my second daughter right away. I couldn’t with my first since I was in shock from major blood lose and I was shaking very badly. Speak to your doctor about having immediate contact with your baby. Every hospital is different with different protocols, but I was able to be with my girls not long after each of my surgeries.

I’d like to add to my comment after reading someone else’s! When my baby wasn’t with me she was with her dad- if your child’s father/other parent/other person in the room is around then they get to do skin to skin while you’re busy (at least that’s what happened at my hospital). For my SO it was sooo special for him and baby to do that- and it bonded those two so much! It was nice, because he has been able to sooth her just as easily (when she isn’t hungry)! When I got her it was then all about me and her and she was already calm and ready to be with me, and he had gotten his fill for a while!

I let my doctor know how important it was to me and they took it seriously. I got to have her pressed against my neck and face for a brief moment when she was first cleaned up-l and again about 20 minutes later after I was stitched up. Afterwards we did recovery together and she fed and stayed with me. I felt like that was a great compromise! The doctors needed that first 20 to stitch me up, because they couldn’t have all of the nurses and my spouse in the room while they worked on me. I went out of my area for my c-section to go to a better hospital, where they encourage all of their patients to have skin to skin and breastfeed (if you’re choosing to bf).

Both c sections I was alone in a room for over two hours.  It’s stinks and I was so bored!! I just kept thinking what is my baby like?  Cuz they only let me hold them for a few seconds.

I got skin to skin while they sewed me up. I advocated for it when I found out I would have to get a c section, but it was also the policy at the hospital I delivered at so it was no problem. (assuming baby wasnt experiencing problems of course).

I just had an emergency c-section Wednesday.  My hospital had a policy that I couldn’t hold baby until recovery.  Honestly given my condition it was for the best but I was worried about skin to skin.  My husband brought baby over to me and we did cheek to cheek until we got to recovery.  Then we skipped the bath and all that to get to skin to skin ASAP.  I think I had a long repair and was still able to do it within maybe an hour of baby’s birth.

Baby had breathing issues so I didn’t get him right away but hubby was waiting with him in the recovery room and we did skin to skin
