Hand foot and mouth - how contagious is this?

We flew in for a family reunion and found out that our nephew has hand foot and mouth. My son is 10 months old and I’m so anxious about him getting it. How contagious is this virus? Can the parents give my son it? Or can he catch it from being near surfaces that the sick child has been near?

Oh my goodness I’m so glad you posted about this. Just yesterday I was so fuming mad! My husband and I dropped our little girl off at his moms house for his little sister who is 14 to babysit her. We ended up having our meeting canceled and came back to pick her up only 20 minutes later (rather than the planned two hours) and the first thing they say to me when I walk in was “well she’s going to get hand foot and mouth disease” and I was like “umm excuse me WHAT?!” They go on to tell me that is sister has been watching a little boy all week who has it and now my daughter is going to get it. His moms exact words to me were “well she’s going to get it sometime so better now than later” I was SO MAD you guys!!!!!!! My husband was too. We left right away and scrubbed our girl down in the bath with so much antibacterial soap, which I don’t even know if it will help or not😢I’m praying she doesn’t get it....how long from when they are exposed to when they show signs?! I am still so angry😡I can’t believe they didn’t tell us this BEFORE we left her when they had every opportunity to tell us, I never would have brought her!!! Ugh.

All of the above, I wouldn't  bring my child around their house or his parents... parents are usually carriers without symptoms.  and they are contagious  even once cleared.

My daughter just got over it. Hand foot and mouth is highly contagious. Most don’t know there children have it until the rash develops

I'm not exactly sure but I know my girlfriend's baby daughter had it so she wouldn't allow her teenage daughter to hang out with my teenage son so that it wouldn't get passed on to my baby son. Maybe confusing but I'd stay away.

STAY AWAY!! Honestly that stuff is HORRIBLE. It is a viral disease.... So if he sneezes, guess what? The whole room could be infected. 
My son had this last year and it was horrible. 
Side note: did they take your nephew to the reunion?! That is just flat out stupid if they did... Just sayin. I’d be severely upset.

It is SO contagious. I walked pasted a baby at the doctors office and we got it. We literally only walked past this little girl and it was so painful I ended up getting it to. I couldn't walk for two days it hurt so bad.
