Do you think there's a better way to vet Lyft and Uber drivers? (Possible trigger warning)

I'm constantly hearing about terrible things Lyft and Uber drivers do. 
If you have suggestions, please explain.
Bonus:
Do you think there's a way for customers to avoid horrible drivers?

As someone who drives for uber, I'm more worried about customers than drivers. I've already had a man refuse to get out of my car and another who wouldn't stop talking about my butt and wanting to see it, and general creeps. 
Talk to drivers and you will hear many more horror stories from them vs. from customers.

I’ve haven’t heard those stories yet but I have heard of some Uber drivers being assaulted & robbed along with not getting paid & getting. Their vehicle damaged

i think its fine. ive heard worse stories about customers. ive had 1 bad expeirence with lyft. in the 5 years ive been using uber i havent had a bad experience. i think the stories like this scare peopls. but if were honest here Taxi drivers used to be in the spot light for incidences like this too. 
i think the company should work on better communication with their customers and better pinning of the riders location. i think that would alleviate alot of the initial tensions upon pick up. Lord knows how many times ive watched the little car go in circles on my phone only for the driver to cancel and i have to wait another 5-10 min for someone to find me. not that it justifies having a piss ass attitude but it is frustrating when youre in a rush

Ermmm no. My partner drives for uber and they go through an extensive background check. Why does no one talk about the passengers? They aren’t vetted at all. He could be picking up a serial killer for all I know😧

I'm wondering if in this case, the driver felt that threatened by the three passengers and felt his life was in danger.  The passengers not giving a drop off location is weird and the driver seemed to do the right thing by then asking them to get out but it escalated.  I'd need to know more details before automatically jumping to the conclusion that the driver was completely in the wrong and not acting out of self defense

An uber driver showed up high off his ass to pick my husband up once. He reported him and uber gave him a free ride and suspended the mans account pending an investigation. I think drug tests and background checks should be mandatory like any other job. Not sure if this is already done, but I suppose they could also do interviews but anyone can fake it for half an hour.

My city won't even allow them to run, as the companies refuse to get taxi licences which would hold them accountable if anything did go sideways, as well as they would have to follow provincial laws for vetting drivers and car safety.
