How old should you stop grounding your kid?

My boyfriend's mum grounds him over the dumbest things and he's almost 18. She once grounded him because he didn't do the dishes because he was at football practice, THAT SHE TOOK HIM TOO.

I actually think grounding could extend past when he turns 18. if he's still living at home, going to high school, parents supporting him financially, etc. then he's still their dependent and subject to grounding and other typical parental controls.

When they stop living with you. If you are over 18 and decide to live in my home there will be rules. If you break a rule then there will be a consequence. It won’t be the same type thing as when you are a kid but depending on your arrangement will be what that consequence is.

When I was 15/16 and my mom tried to ground me I'd laugh in her face, one I'm older now and people need to learn from their own mistakes, if you think grounding is going to teach them at that age, you're so wrong. That makes them want to rebel more and resent you. At that age almost everything I used daily (phone, computer, etc) I had gotten myself and I was not going to let her take something she wasn't paying for. I didn't pay rent while living with her but she barely supported me and she wasn't about to tell me how to live my life and learn from my mistakes.
