Is choosing a trending name a bad idea?

I really wanted a unique name for our baby girl but the name both my husband and I really love is starting to trend everywhere. Since we discussed names I’ve seen two friends of friends name their babies what we were thinking. I’ve also started to see it posted a lot here or in trending baby name lists. I grew up with several other kids in my class with my name and it can be pretty irritating at times. I don’t want that for my girl but I also don’t know if there’s actually going to be a bunch of kids with her name or if it’s just getting more popular in general but not so much that there’s six kids in one class with that name. What do you guys think about naming your baby something popular?

It’s like buying a car. Once you get it, you start to see them everywhere. I decided on Emery, had never met one. Now, they’re everywhere. They were always there, I just notice it more now. Go with the name you love.

I would prefer to avoid something popular or trending. If you are in the US, you can look up the popularity of the name on the Social Security Administration's website. They also have data on change in popularity (i.e., trends) and popularity by state. Take a look and you should be able to see just how popular the name you're considering is or isn't.

I would go with the name you love! It will be the only child with that name in your family. I was one of many Nicole’s in school but I didn’t care and now that I’m an adult it doesn’t affect my life.

I would rather choose a name I love than settle for another less popular name that I'm not completely in love with. that said if 2 my friends named thier baby the same name i might try to find another name I love just as much.

Names that are trending on here or on baby name lists aren't necessarily popular enough that you meet a lot of them in your daily life! But I do know what you mean. One of my favorite names is Elowen and I'd never seen or heard the name other than 1 place where I first found it, now I see polls on here pretty often that have that name in it. But, still have yet to meet one in real life.

If you absolutely love the name, then go for it. I understand the feeling of wanting a unique name. However, I wouldn’t let go of a name I loved just because it was popular.
