Discipline for 1 1/2 - 2 yr olds?!

How do/ did you discipline your 1 1/2 - 2 yr old?! My child doesn’t seem old enough to really understand No. Or else doesn’t want to listen. I want to do the “positive parenting” approach but I’m not sure he is old enough for that or anything else. Temper tantrums are becoming more regular and I would love to hear what works for you! Thanks!!

Kids at that age don’t understand the concept of no, and don’t understand discipline. The positive approach involves giving other options. Instead of saying “no! Get away from that!” You say “walk away please,” which is giving them a positive action to act on, instead of something *not* to do. When they hear words, they think “do this” and don’t understand the negative. At this age, you’re teaching boundaries. Any mistake your child makes is because they don’t understand or know better. You want to teach them better, not discipline when they don’t understand what they did wrong.
If your kid wants to bang pots and pans, suggest a new activity and put remove the temptation. Or say “pots and pans are for cooking! Pillows are for drumming!” And then hand them a pillow instead.
It takes some practice to be sure, but teaching your kid is the key right now :)

Unless it’s unsafe behavior, don’t pay attention to it. Children love attention (positive or negative, doesn’t matter).  So if you give a huge dramatic reaction to something, they’ll do it again - for the reaction. So try to ignore the unwanted behavior and give lots of praise for good behavior.

We occasionally do a timeout. But usually we just don’t give her what she wants if she’s doing something she shouldn’t with it. Like if she’s done eating and throws food on the floor, we get her out of her chair and out the food away so she can’t throw any more. But tantrums can’t really be punished. They do that because they’re overwhelmed and can’t process what they’re feeling. However I don’t let the tantrums work either. So if she’s having a tantrum because she wants candy and i said no, I don’t give her candy. I just try to be supportive and give her something else to try to distract her.

Ours is 19 months. We don’t really discipline yet. We obviously tell him no if something isn’t allowed, and physically remove him from the situation if he doesn’t listen. Tantrums we try to ignore so that he knows he’s not getting anything out of it. If it goes on for too long I try to redirect his attention to something else.

I use my highchair for discipline. When he does something and doesn't listen to no i ask does he want to go in time out and if he said no ill leave it alone, if he does it again ill put him in his highchair then when he is done crying ill say something along the lines of "are you going to stop" and if he says no ill give him a bit more time and  repeat the question if he says yes then ill ask him another question like if he done more than one thing. Basically you train him to do the right thing and repeat until they are quiet and give the right answer and then you let them out.

When my 20 month hits I put her in timeout. Tantrums and saying no to me, I ignore. I praise a lot so she understands I’ll give her attention for positive behavior.  It takes a thousand adda boys for one “your bad”!
