I was 10 days overdue and booked to be induced by balloon catheter
I was 10 days overdue and booked to be induced by balloon catheter. I went in, was checked to see if I was dialated, I wasn’t so they continued to insert the catheter. It was extremely painful and I needed the gas to get through it.
I stayed the night in hospital and was told my waters would be broken the next day. I had mild cramping but nothing severe. At lunch time the next day I was checked to see if I had dialated, I was 4cm. They midwife tried to break my waters but was unsuccessful. A doctor was called in to assist. She also had a lot of trouble breaking them. I was using the gas for the whole procedure because it was soooo painful. Finally the Dr got my waters broken but not fully. They started the drip and contractions began shortly after. At around 4:30pm
I was in ‘active labour’. Contractions got stronger and I was using the fit ball, TENS machine and the gas to get through. Bubba’s heart rate kept going through the roof and they couldn’t get a steady trace on her so I was told I wasn’t allowed to move around any more and had to lie still in bed.
I’m not sure how much more time passed but everyone was concerned about the baby’s heart rate so they stopped the drip and advised me to get an epidural so they could restart the drip in hope that would help her heart rate go down. I was still only 4cm dialated.
Epidural was administered but it took a very long time, the anaesthesiologist had trouble getting it in and had to call for help.
After I had the epi, I became quite nauseated and was throwing up. My heart rate was also very high, as was the baby’s. More hours went by, I was sick a few more times and given drugs to calm the nausea.
My labour did not progress. At around 2am (my 3rd day in hospital) the baby was still in distress, she had pooped inside the womb, I was still only 4cm dialated and both me and bubs were exhausted. It was finally decided at 3am to do an emergency c-section. At 3:55am my little girl was born.
All in all a very traumatic experience for me, but I have a beautiful little girl who is healthy and happy and that’s all that matters.
