I've never had anyone decline inserting their fingers into my vagina
So here I am face to face with a midwife I've never seen before (My OB went on vacation to Greece) and I ask her if she could please check my cervix so that I can know how dilated/effaced I am. I'm 38 weeks with my second baby. She says "No I'm not going to do that because its unnecessary right now plus I dont want to introduce bacteria into your vagina."

^My literal facial reaction.
Okay, I get the bacteria thing but you will have sterile gloves on.. and my water isnt broken..
She also said that just because I'm dilated or effaced it doesnt mean labor will happen tomorrow or even next week, which I'm aware of but I still wanted to know where I am in the process.
When I was pregnant with my first born 4 years ago they began checking me at 35 weeks so I knew exactly how dilated I was and for how many weeks before she was born, which was 38weeks.
Is this a common thing now not to check for dilation and effacement until your in actual active labor?
