tearing is sometimes due to genetic, but also, giving birth in a "gravity" friendly position can help you not to tear. most births happen when women are on their back and it's quite damagable on the body because the sacrum bone can't open. also, it often leads to the use of forceps or other instruments. This is quite bad for tearing. Studies are quite firm on these matters, but most doctors prefer you to be laying on your back for their own confort. Hope it helps.
