How do tattoo prices work?

So I’m thinking about saving up to get my first tattoo. I’m 17 and hope to have saved enough by the time I’m 18. How exactly do they charge you? For the amount of detail, time, colours etc??

All the artists I know charge by the hour these days. Hourly charges range by region (due to cost of living), skill of the artist and demand. Typically artists who are super booked up will charge more. In my area the average is $140 per hour but it ranges from $100-200per hr depending on the artist. If you’re getting something small that takes less than an hour, be prepared to pay a ‘Shop minimum’ (typically a flat rate that’s less than the hourly) which covers all the materials they use to set up and do the Tattoo. Whether the Tattoo takes 5 min or 40 min, the minimum is the same due to setup costs. 
Do your research and prepare to wait if the artist you really want is booked up. You totally get what you pay for. I’ve waited years to get a piece done by an artist I follow and love. Other times, you may be able to get in early on a cancellation. Many artists use Instagram to post their work and are very active on there (and will post when they have cancellations or when their bookings open). I find that to be the easiest way to research artists too.

Depends on the artist, some charge by the hour and some charge by the size/detail its best to go talk to the artist and find out. Thats what i did. I could book a date and time, put a deposit down and I paid the rest when I got it done

Call around and ask what they do by hour but if the design is more simple/small they’ll adjust it to that. Also please save up for a good tip!

It also depends on where you are located. Some areas are more expensive than others. You have to talk with the artist for their pricing and remember, you get what you pay for.
