Carseats in USA.

I will be visiting America soon and will be buying a car seat out there for my child. Does anyone know how the Latch system in American cars works? Is this safer than a seat belt? We will be rear facing as my baby will only be 9 months at the time. Anyone know what car seats to look at or if there are any you would not recommend? Any and all information is greatly appreciated as we will be doing a lot of driving and my child's safety and comfort are my priority. Thank you.
