Where I’m from, it’s mandatory. Otherwise, you’re considered rude. At any age, you have to say it to someone older than you (like a stranger, boss, customer of any age, aunt, uncle, parent, etc).

I am from the south . I say ma’am and sir to everyone out of respect. But when I go out of state, like to California, people will literally shut me down if I say it. Sometimes even in the city part of my state. And I think it is so rude for someone to say, “Don’t call me that.” So aggressively. Like obviously I’m saying it to you out of respect and you are going to bash me in front of everyone . I think it is so inconsiderate . You hear my accent .. you know I am from the south... it’s a manners thing here. But whatever.

In the south this is expected of kids, in other places ma'am can come off offensive because they think it's for old people. If someone calls you ma'am it's most likely how they were raised.
My family lived in Louisiana. My oldest brother  had to call everyone sir and ma'am, he would get in trouble if he didn't. We moved to Illinois, he called a teacher ma'am and she ripped him apart for it. He was pretty young too. Kinda sad and very rude of her I think. I just think everyone should take it as a sign of respect. If you don't like it, tell them politely to not call you ma'am. But if people are being polite and respectful, just take it as that. No need to look for ways they are not being polite or respectful. I've moved around a lot, just my opinion...
