Thoughts on the Mirena IUD?

Would love to hear about any of your experiences with the Mirena IUD. Going to get It hopefully in the next few weeks

My experience with it was awful. 
• P A I N • 
I had intense and debilitating consistent pain for 2 weeks. Then I would have a few pain free hours a day for a week. Then it changed to me having 2-4 waves of intense pain through the day that would last from anywhere between 1-8 hours for the next 2 weeks. Then it slowly got better over the course of 4 months but never completely stopped. I was still taking pain killers every day from it. 
• W E I G H T   G A I N • 
I gained 8 kg in 4 months. It definitely increased my appetite and cravings. 
• M E N T A L   H E A L T H • 
I became so incredibly anxious, overwhelmed, stressed and depressed. I was looking for reason to leave my partner even though I love him so so much. I just felt like we weren’t meant to be together and that we were doomed to fail (we definitely aren’t doomed to fail). I nearly walked out on him 3 times. I cried over the stupidest things. I work full time plus own my own business and even returning a phone call was too difficult for me some days. 
I ended up getting put on antidepressants to counteract the side effects of the Mirena and at worked for a few weeks but then I felt the Mirena pulling me back into the darkness. I know that sounds super melodramatic but that’s the only way I could describe it. 
• S I L V E R   L I N I N G S • 
After the first month or two the bleeding became a lot lighter. I still got my period, but it was no where near as heavy as I usually get it. So that’s good. 
My hair got a lot thicker and better looking too. It was actually amazing and I wish I could’ve kept it. 
Some doctors tried to convince me to keep it in at least 6 months but I just couldn’t do it. I felt like my relationship wouldn’t survive. I felt like I would run away from my whole life. I just couldn’t do it. 
Some doctors were surprised I stuck it out for as long as I did though. 
My partner and I decided to stick with the fertility awareness method and condoms for now and start TTC next year. Once we’ve had our 4 kids, he’s going to get the snip so I don’t have to go on birth control ever again. 
I honestly hate the Mirena and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. But it’s your body, everyone is different. And I know that my case isn’t the normal experience for women.

I got the Mirena IUD on Friday the 10th of August and got my period the following Monday. I’ve been bleeding ever since. Severe backaches, I broke out a bit but it’s cleared up, there were some cramps the first few days, some mood swings. I expected a regular period but it’s been over a week. My doctor did not tell me that this was a possibility so I had to look it up myself when it was past 9 days. Some people had to deal with the blood for the full 3 months so I guess that’s what I should be expecting. I got the IUD so I won’t need to use condoms anymore but this blood = not getting laid anytime soon. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I wish I had chosen a different IUD or even different type of birth control. This may work well for someone else but I’m not happy with the constant spotting/period. Pads are expensive.

I have the paragard IUD, which I chose over the Mirena, because I didn't want additional hormones and I wanted to get my periods (I get insanely bad paranoia if I don't).

It gave me migraines every day, all day long, for 16 months until I got it out.

I had a terrible time with mine! The no periods was nice but there was definitely weight gain and 2 possible chemical pregnancies. Plus when I got it out after only 7 months there was a huge emotional crash that took weeks to get over, and I am not one who has ever struggled in that way.

I had an acute ischemic cerebral stroke when I had the mirena inserted. That's not to say the mirena caused it, in fact my doctors never determined a cause but weren't willing to completely rule it out either. However, I just think it's really important for women considering any type of hormonal birth control to take the risks of stroke seriously, especially if they have a history of migrane. I was 21 when I had my stroke and I almost died. I had brain surgery, am still missing part of my skull, and was never supposed to walk again, nor was I expected to speak or write. Though I still deal with some residual issues, my neurologists consider my case a medical miracle and truly can't explain why I recovered to a near normal.
