I was scheduled to be induced... baby had other plans. Long but worth it read!
8/21 at 6am I was scheduled to be induced. We get to the hospital, sign paperwork, I change, answer all the nurses questions and go about as normal. Around 7:45am they hook me up to an iv (water only at this point) and then around 8:30 the nurse comes back in to start me on pitocin, she checks me and I’m a 3/4 80% effaced and baby is at a -3 station. While she is setting up the bag I ask her if she had started the pitocin... she says not yet. I let her know that I am having a very intense contraction. The next thing I know 3 nurses and the on call doctor rush in, telling me to get on all fours, while one of the nurses is putting an oxygen mask on me. They tell me to breathe as the baby is in distress. The contraction lasts over 3 minutes... and I’m crying because they couldn’t find his heartbeat.. they tell me to breathe and get oxygen to the baby, so I do. They give me a shot of something in my arm and it stops the contraction. The baby’s heartbeat is now detected. They have me lay on my left side as the baby is most comfortable there. They ring my doctor and she tells them do not start her on pitocin, she wants me and the baby to rest. The nurse checks me again, I am now 5cm and baby is at a zero station(all from that one contraction!!). My doctor comes in at 9:10... since the baby has been stable while having contractions, she decides to break my water. 9:15am my water is broken. She tells the nurse to turn the pitocin on at the lowest level and she will be back. Almost immediately the contractions start to pick up in intensity, the baby is doing great during them so my mind is at ease. Around 10:00am they become increasingly painful. I’m calling for the nurse to check me bc I feel a lot of pressure. I’m now at a 7... she asks if I want the epidural, I say no but let me sign the paper just in case I end up wanting one (thank god I did!!)... at 10:20 the pain is unbearable. I’m screaming for the nurse. She checks me and I’m at an 8. I tell her I want to epidural. She goes to find the anesthesiologist. Meanwhile I’m in the room with my husband. I’m freaking out, I’m on all 4s and leaning on him, rocking side to side, I can’t sit still, the pain is SO intense. The anesthesiologist comes in, and I have to sit still through the most painful contractions, she gives me the epidural at 10:35am. 10 min later I’m telling my husband to grab the nurse I have to push, he runs out of the room to grab her and she comes in with another nurse who is on the phone with my dr to RUN back. (Her office is across the street). My dr comes in and I still feel everything as the epidural is barely starting to kick in. She tells me to start pushing. I’m yelling please get him out!! At this point I just want him of knowing he is safe and somehow I block out the pain. His head gets stuck and I’m thinking there’s no way I can do this for one more second. I give the biggest push of my life and my son Jack is born at exactly 11am. Less than 2 hours from when my water was broken to holding my sweet boy! I was not expecting that at all but I’m thanking he man upstairs that I was at the hospital during that first unexpected scary contraction!!!
