“Planned” c-section

jrb37

So I had my c section scheduled for 730am August 9th due to baby being breech. I receive a call in the morning asking if I can go later in the day as they have someone else who had gestational diabetes and couldn’t safely fast until the 130 slot: I said ok. Then I get another call saying they have a lot of moms in labor and will have to bump me to the following morning. So I cried and learned I wouldn’t have a doctor I know performing the surgery. Went to bed and woke up to ANOTHER call from hospital saying they still don’t have room for me but to continue fasting and call them at noon. So it’s now August 10th at noon and I call the hospital they tell me I have two options: wait for c section until Monday or go have one that day but recover in triage as there were no rooms available. Well I was already having contractions and extremely anxious plus my husband had already wasted 2 days off of work for the original c section date/time. I chose to get it done and knew I may recover in triage... so we get to the hospital and the nurses are telling us they don’t know when the c section will be but I STILL cannot eat or drink... so now I’ve been fasting for like 20 hours. They tell my husband to go get some food and people are coming in and out talking to me asking questions about my medical history etc. my husband comes back from eating and all of a sudden they hand him his suit for the surgery and tell me it’s time! I started balling my eyes out because I was so scared... they bring me back to the OR and the anesthesiologist tells me to curl my back leaning over the edge of the operating table... mind you my baby is breech with her head under my rib cage... I couldn’t lean forward if my life depended on it so he proceeded to tell me he couldn’t even see my spine and he poked me about 5 times until he got the spinal block in the right place- didn’t hurt at all at the time but I do have a nasty bruise. As soon as spinal started working I had about 5 people moving me around doing this and that: putting in catheter, putting up curtain, prepping my belly, etc. all of a sudden I felt extremely sick and lost feeling in my left hand. I told the anesthesiologist and he gave me a cold wet cloth for my head and some magic drugs in the IV. I later found out this happened because my blood pressure went extremely low. So now I’m feeling a little better and I ask when my husband will be in... the nurse went to go get him and I hear the doctor say something about incision so I immediately stop her and tell her the doctor who originally was going to do my surgery said he would use code words so I wouldn’t hear what they’re doing; I did NOT want to hear them say scalpel or that they were cutting me etc. 😂 I also told her to test me out first to make sure I was numb, that’s when she told me if I wasn’t numb I would have already felt what she was doing. Anyways my husband comes in he thinks he’s funny taking pictures of my terrified face and several minutes later my baby girl was born! It was amazing and everyone was on board with immediate skin to skin but as soon as they went to lay her on me I had extremely bad pain under my ribs... they told me this was because of fluid but the pain moved to my shoulders and was so bad I couldn’t hold my baby so my husband got to hold her first and love on her. The rest of the surgery I kept asking how much longer until they were done as I just wanted to hold my daughter. They finally finished about an hour later and wheeled us to triage where I held and nursed my daughter. They miraculously found a room for us and brought us in there and for the next 12 hours I just laid in bed holding my little girl. The next morning they took the catheter out and I was up walking around. I’m now 2 weeks post delivery and some days I have extreme pain other days i feel fine, I’ve only been taking Advil and Tylenol. Here’s my girl born 4:05pm weighing 7lbs 9oz and 19 inches long!
