When is the right time to commit to a pet with your SO?

Everyone is different so tell me your experience! 
Were you both financially stable? Were you together x amount of years? Did anyone disagree? Are you happy with your decision? Were you married?

I was with a douche for 2 - 3 years and had been missing having a dog in my life.  We came upon a puppy that chose us..   well, me really.  I trained her, raised her, and made her a super awesome lady that was my sweet, rotten little baby dog.  5 ish years later they brought dogs to my work from the pound and I couldn't help it.  We went to the pound do find another dog for our family.  We went and I didn't meet any dogs I thought would be a good fit for our family.  He focused on an 8 month old dog and said "He's the one for me!" and insisted we talked him home.  Now, we were his 4th parents and he had a couple minor behavior issues and intense separation anxiety.  My douche had absolutely no patience to help this sweet boy get through his issues.  A few moths later  my douche and I broke up.  With fears that he would abuse the new dog that he "absolutely had to have" I found myself about to be homeless and knowing I wouldn't be able to handle my grown dog and train the new boy.  I sent my sweet pup that I raised with him, and took the pound pup with me to make sure he stayed safe and didn't wind up at the pound again.  He loved our old dog, too, so I knew she would be well taken care of.  He has used her for more than a year to manipulate me, going so far as to tell me she had died to get me to talk to him.  I miss her, but I had to cut him off for my own mental health.  2 years later, I love my pound puppy so damn much and I don't know what I'd do without him.  I'll never make that mistake again.  I will never share animal parentalship with another partner again.  Sorry for the book, but I feel like it was all relevant.  I attatched a photo of George, the man-dog I didn't want, but couldn't live without and will never abandon.

Me and my boyfriend got our first puppy together only after a month of dating🤷🏽‍♀️ here we are almost 2 years later with a 2 year old dog and 4 month old baby 👶😊

I honestly wouldn’t get a pet with a partner unless I was was intending on spending my life with him. The same goes for children.

I would say any time if you are willing, (regardless of circumstances) to commit yourself to being a forever home to a pet. You should not get pets if you are not willing to make sacrifices and take care of the pet alone if something happens to the relationship.

This is our sweet boy Kaiser. We got him after about 7 months of dating. He's now a year and a half old, incredibly badly misbehaved (chewer) but we love him to bits and he a and my dog Charli (She's 4, I had her before we met) are inseparable ❤️❤️ If we were to split am certain we would have a custody agreement lol

Just a few months after moving in together there was a cat rescue that was in dire need of homes. We volunteered to be a very temporary home for a cat.......that night we were deciding on a name.  In the spring we got a dog lol 
At the time we weren't married.Juat had a good feeling I guess 😊

I had two Chihuahuas and two cats before I met my now fiancé and after 6 months of dating I got him a cat since we weren’t living together and weren’t planning on it for a while and he was lonely when I wasn’t hanging out with him (he had just moved from Ohio to Florida a week before we met lol) we moved in together not long after since we were both struggling with money at that point.. after a year we got our first pit together and then a year after that we got her a friend since she was to big to play with my little ones lol now we have a VERY full house with a baby on the way but I couldn’t be happier with all my babies 🤗🤗
Sometimes we have little “arguments” where we  play fight over who’s getting the cat I got him if we ever split up because she is our little angel baby and the most perfect thing on this earth (we clearly pick favorites I can’t even lie 🤷🏼‍♀️)

I never committed to a pet “with” my SO. I got dogs that I wanted, or I got a dog for them. There has always been distinct ownership so there’s no issue of property if a split occurs. It was always discussed beforehand, but the understanding was there of a mine and yours / “ours”.
