Is it wrong for asking for YOUR items back?

I'm dealing with a break-up and I kindly asked my ex to please return the items that I gave him during the relationship.  We broke up in bad terms and I feel he doesn't deserve to keep what I had given him.  He admitted that if he returns the items then the relationship would be over...(DUH)!  Then he says that my actions are tasteless to ask for things back.  I don't!  Your thoughts?
