i personally disagree with this because i got bullied as a kid and i never did anything about it, so it kept happening.

We tell our kids to 1) avoid whomever is messing with them, tell them to stop, walk away, etc. 2) if it happens more than once, tell the teacher or supervising adult and 3) if teachers haven't don't anything and the kid is still messing with them they have our permission to hit back to defend themselves. 
Steps 1&2 can be ignored if they can't get away from the kid(s)

I disagree 10000%. I would think that the idea that a child can’t defend themselves actually promotes bullying

I told my 5 year old.. if someone hits you, hit them back harder they won't hit u again. I'll always tell any of my kids to hit back. They certainly won't be targeted for not standing up for themselves.

I disagree as well. I think the problem is parents allowing their kids to be bullied and beat up and telling them they can’t fight back and to “tell a teacher” when so many kids do but it’s one teacher with 30 + kids in class, teachers don’t have eyes in the back of their heads. And unfortunately some kids choose suicide because nothing ever gets done, and they feel the only way for it to stop and to fight back is through taking their life. So yeah I will be enrolling my kids into some kind of self defense classes, if someone decides to punch my child - my kid will fight back. Imagine as an adult someone punching on you...are you telling me that you can’t fight back in self defense? It’s the dumbest way of thinking

Ummm no! That’s just saying it’s okay for your child to be bullied! School is not how it use to be, you have to fight back or they take it as you’re weak and will continue to bully. Most schools don’t do anything anyways if they are to report bullying. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I think that’s not what you should talk about at home at the beginning; they shouldn’t be going to school thinking they are going to fight somebody and that it’s “parent approved” to do so as long as somebody else started it.
It should always begin with a discussion about appropriate authorities and what to do first, but I will try to make sure that my son knows if it’s self defense, I would never be upset at him.

I agree if that’s all you teach or tell your child that is a problem. There are better ways to deal with things than hitting someone back, but if you need to defend yourself or another person from immediate physical danger, my kids will know they can do what they need to. 
We will teach our children to be shepherds , not wolves or lambs.
