Would it be foolish to use ALL our savings for ivf?

After 3years ttc and two blighted ovums my husband and I are desperate to have a baby. We've done the basic fertility testing and a few more to go but doc thinks our only option is IVF and PGD testing. Unfortunately our insurance doesn't cover fertility treatments so all would be out of pocket. We have a nice chunk in savings and I'm willing to use all if necessary instead of going into debt but my husband doesn't think it's wise to do so (although he'll do it to make me happy). Am I thinking with my heart instead of my brain?

I honestly wouldn’t feel comfortable using all of it. I would use a portion of it and then finance the rest, that way I could leave some cushion for emergency

We blew through our savings and were down to our last couple hundred dollars when we finally got pregnant with twins. Slowly building it back now, but it will take years to get back the damage we did, especially with the expenses of two babies on the way and a high risk pregnancy. My advice would be that it’s worth it to blow all your money, but make sure you always have enough for pregnancy/babies since that is your goal in the end anyway!

We spent over 20 grand between 2 separate clincis, worth every penny now that I'm pregnant. Check out CNY fertility in Syracuse. Their cycle is 3800 dollars, with meds and monitoring that you do local to you, and travel, you'll be spending much less than at most clinics

Look at a loan for partial funding and clinics that offer a shared risk program. It’s a little more expensive but depending on the clinic the deals can be great. My clinic has a 6 rounds and $$ back if you don’t have a live birth (Shady Grove).

I think you should do it. It’s great that you have a savings to use. My husband and I are currently doing IUI with a credit card.  If a baby is something you want bad enough then I say do it.

We chose to keep/continue to grow our savings and take out a fertility loan. Turns out with our good credit we got an incredible rate and we’re so glad we did it this way. If you can afford the monthly payment of the loan and can get a good rate, I’d highly recommend it.

I personally would look into a loan.   Maybe use 1/2 the savings and loan the rest so if there is an emergency (especially hopefully in a year with a baby) you have something to fall one.    In the meantime start saving every penny and try to find ways to make a few extra bucks to help.
