Standard nostril jewelry is 20g but piercing artist pierce with a needle that is a larger size than the jewelry so that the jewelry will easily fit inside of the hollow needle to be inserted into the new piercing site. With such a small jewelry size they usually use 18g or 16g needles for this.

I think 16g and 5/16” diameter. I’ve stretched it to a 14g with the same diameter and I like how it looks
