Why do doctors press your stomach?

I went to the doctors with a UTI and I had to lie there while they pressed my stomach. Why do they do this?

Yep they are just feeling for any masses (which you probably won’t have) but mostly painful areas. It’s just part of a normal check up usually. But if bacteria travels up your urethra to the bladder you might have belly pain. So they can test you for a bladder infection too.

I believe it's to palpate the area to detect structural abnormalities as well as searching for tender areas
