Would you ask permission?

My husband’s mom passed away when we were dating back in 2012. His sister has her middle name passed down as Marie.
We are having a girl, and would really like to have her middle name as Marie too. I loved the time I spent with his mom when she was with us, and would like to contribute her name to our baby girl’s. So my question is.. would you ask permission from the sister? Or just name baby what we want?... 
My husband says after all she was his mom too. And there’s no promise that his sister would even have a girl.

I wouldn’t ask permission. But I’d tell your sil about it. Middle names are soooo common and they can both have the middle name.

My brother’s middle name was passed down from my grandpa. We decided to use it for my second son, but I did ask my brother first. As much as we have equal ties to my grandfather, I felt my brother had a little more “claim” to the name since it is his middle name. 
He had no problem with me using it and I’ve told him if he does decide to use it as well I’m fine with that. No reason cousins can’t have the same middle name, but I just wanted to make sure my brother and I were on the same page.

I honestly dont see why you would have to ask permission..my husbands father passed and we used his name as our sons middle name, his while family loved the idea. And now that my sister in law is pregnant shes having a girl and also using it as a middle name bc it's a gender neutral name. So I don't see why she can't still use it if she eventually wanted too. I also did the same with my daughter, she has my moms middle name and my sister also used, my niece has my moms first and middle name as her middle name.

My sister and I both plan on naming our children after our incredibly beloved grandmother, in some combo of first and middle names. We talked about it and the overlap doesn't bother us, and the name beongs to us both equally. I think it's a lovely tribute, and I hope your SIL will see it for the act of love it is, and be touched at how much you two loved her mom.

I have my mom's middle name as my middle name. I didn't give it to my daughter, but if my brother wanted to use it, i would be delighted!
