Anya or Anja? Read description!!

Question

I love the baby girl name Anya because it means Grace and that's my husbands adopted sisters name. But my husband is Dutch and German and in the Netherlands, Norway, Germany and Sweden they spell the name Anja. Anya is a Russian name and we don't have any Russian in our genes. I am conflicted because I am drawn towards Anya since it's easier to spell and pronounce but I love the fact that we are respecting my husbands heritage if we go with Anja. What do you think?

You're still honoring the name with a different spelling. Anya is more Americanized and will be less difficult to have to correct all her life. I'd go with Anya, it's beautiful!

All the Anja's I've know have spelled it with the j. Apparently the y is more common though. I'd go with what is more common. When in doubt, have Siri or some other voice dictation spell it for you. That's why we did Nora no 'h'.

I'm also conflicted with the j/y predicament. I like Freya, but also Freja or Freyja. To make it easier I'm going with the Americanized version so she's not constantly correcting everyone
