So I was supposed to start my "period"  today, but I started spotting on the 28th, my question is it's not red like period blood and it's also not as much as a period should be, and I have never had a period come early, could I still be pregnant?

Yes! You could definitely be pregnant. That sounds like it could have been implantation bleeding. I had the same thing about 3 days before my missed period, and didn’t end up getting a really solid positive test until 5 days after my period was due. I did have a day with a very faint line BFP, next day negative, then back to those faint lines. 
Basically, don’t be discouraged right away if you get a negative test. If you had late implantation (which sounds like a complete possibility) then it might take a few days for your hcg levels to ramp up.
