Should I be offended?

Question

I’m 17, black, and “liberal”, while my friend is 18, white, and “conservative”. We were talking about politics, particularly Trump and Obama. I mentioned everything that Trump has done that have upset me or caused me great concern (everything I said could be backed up with several sources from various platforms), and she did the same with Obama (without any evidence just stuff she’s heard her parents say). I respect her and what she believes, and before today I thought she did too. But when I was telling her how I felt about Obama, she said that I only felt that way because I was black, and all black people love Obama. I was offended because my race has absolutely nothing to do with why I admire Barack Obama. My question is should I be offended that she said this. I don’t plan on ending my friendship with her, but I want to know whether I should talk to her about how it made me feel. Thanks 💛

That “friend” clearly doesn’t respect you. I don’t think the person is actually a friend at all. I don’t think it will add positivity to your experience. I say take what you have learned from the relationship and move on without this person in your life.

If you’ve got to ask strangers if you should be offended then you probably shouldn’t be. It’s a fact that more black people like Obama, for many reasons, but also because he was the first black president and people thought he could relate better to them, so you can’t blame her for assuming that about you as well. 
People can have different viewpoints and support whoever they want politically. Using that as a reason to ‘cut them off’ or ‘stop being their friend’ makes you look immature. That’s like the worst advice. You guys should either talk it out like adults and agree to disagree or just not include politics in your discussions and save your friendship.

That did come off as ignorant and rude. I would personally educated her on this topic so she wont be coming off as racist to other ppl if this topic ever comes up in the near future because I mean she is your friend so you didn't do anything  but if she does this to another person they might take this too lightly n I'm latina and I LOVE OBAMA!!❤❤ and hate oompa loompa (trump) but it's like you said he has done things that I believe are immoral but that's my opinion and he comes off very narcissistic

Yes you should be, she was judging your political views and associating them with the color of your skin. She was also trying to stereotype black people. You have the right to have whatever view u have on whatever president but has nothing to do with your race. It's like saying all white people love trump. It's not true. I point out to her that you have your view points because Obama has the same morals or political view as u. Also she needs to get her own point of view instead of going off her parents. It's always good to have your own mind and do research.

I find that’s rude. I would be offended if I were you. I’d rethink the friendship or how close you can be if you stay friends. Personally, I don’t talk politics with my friends because it just causes issues for nothing. Even conservatives argue amongst themselves and liberals too. It’s just a mess.

There's no reason to be offended. 
Your friend may have been wrong about YOU when she said you only admire Obama because you're black. But you can't ignore the support he has from the vast majority of black people, and the amount of votes he received solely because he's black. This can make for an interesting discussion of you stop taking things so damn personally.
