Has anyone else checked their own cervix?

So I read that as long as your water hasn’t broken yet and your hands are clean it’s fine to try to check your own cervix (if you can even reach it!) well I checked mine about a week ago and it was very soft but definitely closed. Well the past couple days I’ve been in a lot of pain with cramps, lightening Crotch, BH contractions and back pain so I decided to check today and big difference! I can fit my finger through it easily and it freaked me out!

I hate when people act like you should never touch your own body! I checked my cervix throughout ttc, so why now would it be hands off? Yes, you are right, if you’ve washed your hands and your membranes haven’t ruptured you aren’t hurting anything. During pregnancy your cervix should feel soft like pursed lips. And while it’s possible to dilate,  I walked around for 3 weeks dilated to a 3 so it doesn’t always mean anything. Or you can be closed and in a matter of hours go into labor. Being informed about your body is always a good thing mama!

Ok, I don't know if anyone has this issue but my cervix is high as heck and far up, cervical checks are excruciating 😱😬

As long as your hands are clean it’s totally fine to check. Most people who do natural family planning check theirs daily and know how it feels. I would say you shouldn’t rely on your own check though and if something changes it might be best to have your doctor confirm.

I have no problem with women knowing their own bodies but, during pregnancy, I would not recommend you be doing home cervical checks until at least full term (39 weeks). Cervical checks can introduce bacteria that could cause an infection (yes, even if you washed your hands) because it pushes bacteria from your vagina into your cervix, it can also cause premature rupture of membranes which you definitely don't want. Having sex or using your finger to locate your cervix is one thing but actually inserting a finger into your cervix is another, that's when there's an increased risk. Plus, it tells you nothing. You can be dilated for weeks before going into labour or you can go from tightly closed to baby in a matter of hours.

I checked my cervix regularly during TTC but have avoided it during pregnancy. (Also it’s really hard for me to reach now lol) Checking your cervix is fine and perfectly safe with clean hands and intact waters— 
I wouldn’t worry about it much, and wouldn’t check often personally. Cervical dilation can happen weeks before labor so it isn’t really a good way of telling how close you are to delivery.

I checked in my first 2 pregnancies and I checked all through ttc. I figure my partners penis hits it all the damn time why are my clean fingers any worse?
